In 2006 Saga Business and Community shaped the idea of organizing a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Conference on an annually basis. The underlying motivation and intentions were as follows:
  • Necessity of aligning to a unique understanding of what Corporate Social Responsibility means.
  • Bringing together the four major social actors: the private sector, the public sector, mass media and the civil sector- in order to streamline a strategic approach to CSR that will become a powerful driver for their return on investment.
  • Approaching the concept of CSR in an integrated manner, reaching all of its six fundamental elements: business conduct, occupational health and safety, employee relationship, client and supplier relationship, monitoring and reporting systems, community involvement.
  • Necessity of creating a platform for the multi-stakeholder dialogue: The planned conference was supposed to further this dialogue. To this end, scientists, practitioners, politicians as well as representatives of government and non-government organizations (NGO) should be brought together and given the opportunity for discussion.
  • Topicality and the importance of the topic Corporate Social Responsibility itself in science and practice: The numerous articles in recent years, the growing number of sustainability and environmental reports published by corporations as well as the efforts undertaken by various national governments and the European Commission underlined the importance of the topic.

The 1st International CSR conference at Bucharest , CSR06 "Investing in the future" finally took place on November 8 and 9, 2006. The conference took place under the high auspices of WBCSD and The Global Compact, two of the most prestigious global organizations that promote corporate social responsibility.
